RAeS Human Powered Aircraft Icarus Cup @ Lasham Gliding Club – RESULTS

Results of the Society’s Human Powered Aircraft Icarus Cup competition, which took place 13-22 July 2012 at Lasham Gliding Society.

The inaugural HPA Icarus Cup, took place at Lasham Gliding Society from 13-22 July 2012 to commemorate the 51st anniversary of Human Powered Flight at Lasham Airfield. The competition, run by the Society’s Human Powered Aircraft Specialist Group, was designed to progress the sport from occasional record attempts into a viable activity and featured a number of challenges, with the aim of crowning one team first ever winners of the Royal Aeronautical Society HPA Icarus Cup 2012.

This is the first event of its kind and to have 5 human powered aircraft on one site at the same time is an achievement in itself!

For those that missed it, reports are available: Day 1 & 2, Day 3, Day 4, Day 5, Day 6, Day 7, Day 8 & 9.

It goes without saying that everyone involved in the competition – all competitors, crew, marshalls, and everyone who lent a hand, should be very proud of what they achieved. However, it was a competition, so we have some very important results to announce. The winners of the RAeS Human Powered Aircraft Icarus Cup 2012 are -

Inaugural Icarus Cup Winner – Robin Kraike
Winning Team – Team Airglow

And in second and third place -

Second place – Team Betterfly
Third place – Team SUHPA (Southampton University)

Congratulations everyone, and safe flying!

Just recovering from seeing slow turning propellers when I close my eyes. I was too busy herding the enormous butterflies to record all the times and distances, so many thanks to Claire and Emma for that and also writing this up for the Society.
It has now been proven beyond doubt that HPA flying is a practical and exciting air sport with an excellent future. There was also much exchange of help, ideas and experience between teams which made the event even more enjoyable.
