The Sheffield Branch inaugural lecture evening took place on Tuesday 27th March. The event was kindly hosted by the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Boeing facility. The lecture was delivered by John Roberts FRAeS, A380 Chief Engineer Airbus UK.The Sheffield Branch Chairman Mr Phil Spiers MRAeS, Structural Integrity Centre Manager at AMRC opened proceedings by welcoming guests that included RAeS Chief Executive Simon Luxmoore and RAeS President Lee Balthazor. Prior to the lecture Mr Balthazor was invited to address the 200 strong audience and formally welcome Sheffield as the 67th member of the Royal Aeronautical Society’s international Branch network. It was noted that the evening marked not only the inaugural Sheffield Branch lecture evening but also happened to be the inaugural event to be hosted by AMRC’s brand new Knowledge Transfer Centre.
Sheffield Branch President Prof Geoff Tomlinson OBE FRAeS proposed the vote of thanks to John Roberts for delivering an excellent and fitting inaugural lecture. Prof Tomlinson also thanked the members of the local Branch committee for their enthusiasm and endeavour in successfully forming and launching the Sheffield Branch. It was noted that the new Branch already has a full lecture programme scheduled and that the next event would take place at the Knowledge Transfer Centre on the 28th May with Richard Noble due to deliver a lecture on the Bloodhound SSC land speed record. raesenquiries@amrc.co.uk
