A new venture to robotically mine asteroids for precious metals and even water has been revealed.
The venture, called Planetary Resources, has the backing from dotcom entrepreneur and billionaire Google founder Larry Page and filmmaker James Cameron. The team, which also includes ex-NASA scientists, plan to develop a family of spacecraft, to observe and prospect likely near-Earth objects and then to rendezvous and mine them. The first spacecraft, say the company is set to launch in the next two years.
