Inaugural RAeS Young Person’s Lecture 2011

On 28 November, the inaugural Young Persons’ Lecture Evening and Awards Reception took place at the Royal Aeronautical Society’s headquarters in London. Organised by and for young people, the event comprised lectures on aerodynamics given by two young people and the presentation of the Society’s Centennial Scholarships and Young Persons Medals and Awards. Toulouse Branch Gordon Corps lecture

The Toulouse Branch was formed in 1991 with Airbus test pilot Gordon Corps as first chairman. Following his untimely death in 1992 the Branch instigated a named lecture in his honour. The 20th Gordon Corp lecture duly took place on the 17th January and was delivered by Ed Strongman, Airbus Chief Test Pilot Military.

A Career In Vortices And Edge Forces – Dr John E. Lamar

The Lanchester Lecture was set up to honour Frederick William Lanchester, HonFRAeS, Britain’s fi rst great aerodynamicist. He is best known for designing and building the fi rst British petrol driven four wheeled motor car (in 1895) and for his work on the theory of fl ight and design of aircraft. Lanchester’s work on stability was fundamental to aviation and he formulated the first comprehensive theory of lift and drag.

This lecture recognises the background and distinguished work of Frederick William Lanchester, and notes that Dr John E Lamar’s background has similarities with his, especially parts of his research in aeronautics and vortices. (more…)

On 8 December the 100th Royal Aeronautical Society Wilbur and Orville Wright Lecture was given by Captain Suzanna Darcy-Hennemann – Chief Pilot and Director of Flight Training, Boeing. The former chief test pilot on the 777 programme, in 2005 Captain Darcy-Hennemann was the captain for the record-breaking 777-200LR flight from Hong Kong to London – the long way around.

We caught up with Captain Darcy-Hennemann to ask about the challenges of meeting the immense demand for new pilots, her day-to-day job, and what she’d like to see in the next evolution of the 777 airliner.

In addition to the regular exhibition and series of talks and seminars, the Careers Team introduced Speedy CV Checks which ran throughout the day and which were extremely popular with visitors. RAeS Human Powered Group Celebrates 50th Universary of First UK Flight

The 9th November, 1961 was the day that Derek Piggott became the first man since Icarus to take off and fly under his own steam. 50 years on and the Royal Aeronautical Society’s Human Powered Aircraft Group are still passionate about achieving recognition for the efforts made by those aeronautical engineering students and are hopeful that it may one day become an Olympic sport. John Farley has been using flight simulators of one sort or another since 1958 to the present.
The lecture will cover some of the remarkable changes in the nature and capabilities of simulators from his perspective as a user. He will discuss lessons that he has learned about simulation and offer some personal views concerning the way simulators are used in respect of both research and pilot training applications. In the context of research he suggests there are parallels in respect of the raw data produced from simulation and the raw data measured in wind tunnels. (more…)
